About Renovation Cost Lab

Renovation Cost Lab is an independent, educational home-improvement cost resource built for homeowners in the United States. Our goal is simple: help you understand roughly what a renovation project might cost before you talk to a contractor, so you can plan a realistic budget, ask better questions, and avoid surprises.

Our mission

Most cost information online is either vague (“it depends”) or presented as a single authoritative-sounding number with no explanation of how it was calculated. We take a different approach. Every calculator on this site uses a transparent, deterministic formula and separates materials from labor so you can see why a number looks the way it does. We would rather show our work and let you adjust the inputs than hand you a mystery figure.

What our tools do

  • Produce budgeting estimates based on the measurements and prices you provide.
  • Break results into materials, labor, and other line items where it helps you plan.
  • Ship with editable default prices that are clearly labeled as planning assumptions.
  • Explain the formula and the assumptions behind each result.

What our tools do NOT do

We want to be honest about our limits. Renovation Cost Lab is not a licensed contractor, engineer, architect, or inspection service, and nothing on this site is professional advice. Specifically:

  • Our estimates are not quotes. Only a qualified local professional who inspects your project can give you a binding price.
  • We do not perform site visits, structural assessments, or code reviews, and we cannot account for the specific conditions of your home.
  • Default prices shipped in our calculators are editable educational-demonstration assumptions, not verified national averages. See our pricing methodology for details.
  • We never claim content was professionally reviewed unless it actually was. See our editorial policy.

Safety first

Some projects involve real hazards — structural, electrical, gas, plumbing, and more. Please read our safety disclaimer and consult licensed local professionals for any safety-critical work.
