Deck Building Cost Calculator

Enter your deck dimensions, material, railing, stairs, and foundation to estimate materials, labor, and total budget.

Drives decking surface and railing pricing. Educational defaults, not verified averages.

Taller decks need more framing and footing — raises the framing allowance above 4 ft and again above 8 ft.

Leave 0 to use the educational default ($18/sq ft).

Important: This tool is for BUDGETING only, not structural design. Deck framing, footing, and railing requirements are governed by local building codes and often require permits and inspection. Consult a licensed contractor or engineer.

How We Calculated This

  • Deck area = length × width.
  • Decking surface = area × material $/sq ft (boards + fasteners).
  • Framing = area × base $7.00/sq ft, multiplied by a height factor (×1.25 above 4 ft, ×1.6 above 8 ft).
  • Railing = railing linear ft × material $/linear ft.
  • Stairs = step count × $65/step.
  • Foundation = flat allowance by type (concrete piers $600, helical piles $1,800, existing $0).
  • Labor = area × labor $/sq ft (defaults to $18/sq ft when left at 0).
  • Total = decking + framing + railing + stairs + foundation + site prep + labor + permit + contingency.
  • Cost per sq ft = total ÷ deck area.
