Attic Insulation Cost Calculator

Enter your attic area and target R-value to estimate insulation materials, labor, removal, air sealing, and total budget.

Attic target is often R-38 to R-60 depending on climate zone

Leave 0 to use the type default scaled to your target R-value.

Important: Spray foam application and removal of existing insulation may require professional handling and protective equipment. Pre-1978 homes may contain hazards such as asbestos or lead — have materials assessed before disturbing them.

How We Calculated This

  • Area = attic area entered in sq ft.
  • Material cost/sq ft = type baseline ($/sq ft at R-38) × (target R-value ÷ 38), unless a material price override is entered.
  • Materials = area × material cost/sq ft, then × (1 + waste factor%). Waste applies to material cost only.
  • Labor = area × labor rate (type default or user override).
  • Removal = area × $1.25/sq ft, added only when existing insulation is removed.
  • Air sealing = area × $0.35/sq ft, added only when air sealing is enabled.
  • Total = materials + labor + removal + air sealing + contingency.
  • Required depth (in) = target R-value ÷ material R-per-inch.
  • Total cost per sq ft = total ÷ attic area.

Assumptions

  • R-value explanation: higher R = more resistance to heat flow; required depth depends on material R-per-inch.
  • All prices are editable planning assumptions, not verified or guaranteed national averages.
  • Energy savings are not guaranteed and depend on climate zone and air sealing.

What's excluded

  • Knob-and-tube wiring remediation
  • Mold or moisture damage repair
  • Structural venting changes
  • Asbestos handling
