Flooring Installation Cost Calculator

Add each room to estimate material (with waste), labor, prep, removal, underlayment, and trim for your new floor.

Rooms

Add a row per room. For irregular rooms, enter an equivalent length × width that matches the measured area.

Leave 0 to use the material default.

$
%

Extra material for cuts. Diagonal / herringbone patterns need more; tile typically higher than carpet.

Adds $1.50/sq ft for tear-out and disposal.

Adds $0.55/sq ft of underlayment / padding.

How We Calculated This

  • Net area = Σ (room length × room width) across all rooms.
  • Purchase area = net area × (1 + waste % ÷ 100).
  • Flooring material = purchase area × material $/sq ft.
  • Installation labor = net area × labor $/sq ft (labor billed on finished area, not waste).
  • Underlayment (if on) = net area × $0.55/sq ft.
  • Subfloor prep = net area × prep rate (none $0, minor $0.75, self-level $2.25 per sq ft).
  • Remove existing floor (if on) = net area × $1.50/sq ft.
  • Trim (if > 0) = baseboard linear ft × $3.50/lin ft.
  • Total = material + underlayment + labor + prep + removal + trim + contingency.
  • Cost per sq ft = total ÷ net area.

Assumptions

  • Waste % varies by material and install pattern; expose a single editable input.
  • All $/sq ft prices are editable planning assumptions, not verified national averages.
  • Labor is charged on net (finished) area, not the waste-inflated purchase area.

What's excluded

  • Subfloor structural replacement
  • Moisture mitigation
  • Stair treads
  • Furniture moving
